School photographers who operate their own businesses must also work hard to build a client base through advertising and networking. School Photographer Job Overview

A school photographer is a professional photographer who takes pictures of school students for a living. They generally go to public or private schools in order to take pictures of students once or twice per year. Many school photographers are employed by franchise photography studios, but some work for themselves.

School Photographer Job Requirements

Since parents rely on school photographers to capture their child's school memories, they must be dedicated to creating the best quality pictures for their clients. School photographers need a great deal of patience and excellent customer service skills, since they may have to accommodate the moods of the children with whom they work.[3]

School Photographer Education

School photographers typically do not need to complete education beyond the high school level. However, getting some education in related subjects can be helpful, especially since some photographers may plan to open their own businesses. While in school, students who are interested in becoming school photographers can benefit from taking photography, math, and computer science classes. Those who intend to go into business for themselves may need to take basic courses in accounting, marketing, and business.[4]

School Photographer Training

Most photographers gain their training through apprenticeships or learning while on the job. This is also true for school photographers, who can build a portfolio of work by assisting experienced photographers. During high school or college, aspiring school photographers can gain experience by taking pictures for the school newspaper or website, especially images that involve fellow students or teachers.[5]

School photographers must also be willing to learn some advanced photography techniques that can appeal to their clients. Working with photography editing software such as PhotoShop requires both skill and practice, but learning to use this kind of software can make the finished pictures look professional, which will attract more customers.[6]
